MISSING FOR TEN YEARS!

“This week GAA received a call asking for our help to look after a cat temporarily as his owner had been taken into hospital. Always happy to help where we can, we agreed, and this dear little cat was brought in to GAA on 11 August 2018. It transpired that this cat did not belong to this gentleman, but was in fact a stray cat that he had been feeding for some time. On scanning for a microchip, it turned out that this was a cat called Larry!

Larry is now 14 years old, and 10 years ago, he went missing from his home and never returned. His owner tried desperately to find him, searching and calling for him, day and night, to no avail, and sadly she began to accept that he was gone. She truly thought he had passed away, and as you can imagine, this was a very upsetting time…

When we contacted Larrys owner, to say he was with us, she was completely overwhelmed and very shocked, having by this time accepted that her dear cat had most likely passed away. While she is very pleased that Larry is alive and well, sadly her situation has changed, and she is unable to take Larry back. She told us today that she is feeling extremely emotional, having already grieved for Larry all those years ago, she feels like she is grieving for him all over again.

We hear this story, again and again, with people that have no idea of their cats age, because ‘one day a cat turned up on their doorstep and they decided to keep it’. Although it appears to be a kindly act, it is in fact a very cruel thing to do, as some owners are extremely distressed at the loss of their pets. This highlights the importance of microchipping and also reporting a stray cat that may have lost its way. If there is a stray cat on your property, please call for help and try to stop this happening yet again. Guernsey Animal Aid are happy to come and scan a pet, our ultimate aim is to reunite any pet with its family.

MICROCHIPPING IS DONE FOR A REASON!!!”
