MISSING FOR EIGHT YEARS!
“Hello, my name is Theodore. I am a neutered male, microchipped and I was missing for 8+ years. I found my way to a vinery where the owner decided to keep me, and not report me as a stray. I was a good hunter and I was able to keep the vermin down, and live in her greenhouse. Had she reported me to a rescue, I would have been reunited with my family, who had reported me as lost, and tried everything they could possibly do to try to find me. The owner of the vinery, later sold her house, moved away and left me behind.
I continued to stay on the property, and when the new owners moved in, they tried very hard to find out who I belonged to, but to no avail. Even though this lady wasn’t my owner, she took me to the vets, as I had continuing problems. From a simple wormer and flea treatments, to abscesses that needed to be drained and treated with medication, this kind lady saw that my needs were met. At one point I was very, very ill with pneumonia, and the vet suggested having me euthanised but this lady never gave up on me. I have cost her hundreds of pounds in medical bills and she decided to pay for my treatment to give me a chance. Last week, the lady who had been looking after me so well decided to try one last ditch attempt to find my original owner. She called Guernsey Animal Aid and they came down to meet me. Within 10 minutes my original owner was found. I think that she was very shocked, but also very pleased to find that I was still alive, and doing really well. Because I have been here for so long, my original owner is letting me stay here, as I am well settled, and very much loved. I have 2 ‘brothers’ and here I am relaxing with my ‘sister’ Nellie.
This whole sorry story, could have been prevented if the very first lady in question had contacted an animal welfare organisation when Theodore first turned up, and he could have been reunited with his family almost immediately.
Sadly, we hear this story, again and again… ‘that one day a cat turned up on our doorstep, we gave it some food and it just stayed here, so we decided to keep it’. Although it appears to be a kindly act, it is in fact a very cruel thing to do, as many owners are extremely distressed at the loss of their pets. Please remember Theodore’s Story, and if you think that there is a stray cat on your property, please call for help and try to stop this happening yet again.
